Colour Your Kitchen – Core Kitchen Review & Giveaway

Published on October 14, 2014 • Last updated November 24, 2014 by Elizabeth Atia

Core Home KitchenCore Kitchen is an American kitchenware company dedicated to bringing high quality, affordable time-saving tools, gadgets, knives, cutting boards, and accessories to your kitchen, along with a lively splash of colour. Their products are made from a wide variety of materials: organic bamboo, glass, nylon, silicone, stainless steel, polypropylene and cast iron.

Their colourful and fun tools including bowls, measuring cups, knives, chopping boards and mats, trivets, utensils and much more have been a huge hit in many kitchens in the US and they are currently expanding their business in the UK. Their products are currently available in Bloomingdales, TK Maxx and on Ventee Privee here in the UK.

Core Kitchen recently sent me a box of goodies to play with. I’ve been using them for a few weeks now and I’d like to tell you all about them!

Core Home Santoku Knife LimeFirstly, their Santoku Knife, in lime. This knife was designed for precise food preparation. Made from high carbon stainless steel the grooves on the sides of the 7 inch blade and the non-stick coating prevent finely sliced food from sticking, meaning you can chop, quickly and finely, without having to stop to push the food off the knife.

Although I do prefer my knives to have a bit more weight to them, this knife definitely does what it says on the tin, and it looks swish too with its bold colours. It has an ergonomic non-slip grip and a handy sheath for safe storage. It retails for $18 USD.

Core Home Utility Knife TealThe Utility Knife, in teal. This knife (often called a sandwich knife) is ideal, with its semi-serrated blade, for chopping large fruits and vegetables and for slicing cheese and meats – perfect for preparing sandwiches. Made from the same materials as the Santoku knife the 4.5 inch blade will stay sharp and it also has a plastic sheath. It retails for $12 USD.

Core Home Paring Knife Lime

The Paring Knife, in lime, completes the first set. The 3.5 inch blade is designed for peeling, coring, mincing, dicing and cutting small items. Made from the same materials as the previous two knives it also comes with a sheath. It retails for $11 USD.

These three knives can be purchased individually or as a set and it comes in other colours too, including azure/mandarin and banana/mandarin.

Core Home Veggie Utility Knives

Core Kitchen also do a whimsical range of veggie utility knives with patterns including radishes, peppers, carrots, corn, cucumbers, broccoli and aubergine/eggplants printed onto the stainless steel semi-serrated blades themselves. These retail at $12 USD each and come with a sheath for storage.

I do think they are rather adorable, don’t you? When it comes to cleaning the whole range of knives, due to the non-stick coating and colours, they recommend you hand wash only.

To test out the knives, Core Kitchen also sent me one of their large dual grip cutting boards in snow/teal. Made from polypropylene plastic this board is stain and odour resistant, dishwasher safe and reversible, giving you double the work space. A juice channel on one side collects excess liquid, keeping your counter tops clean while their signature dual grip edges keep the cutting board in place. Measuring  15 x 11.5 inches it’s as fairly good sized board and comes in a range of colours, a handy feature if you use colour coding to prevent cross contamination in the kitchen.

Core Kitchen Ingredients

You can find Core Kitchen on Facebook and Twitter and browse their wide range of kitchen products in their online shop.

The favourite that involves a lot of chopping in our household is our Thai Green Curry, it’s a family affair as a big pot of veg is expected so it’ll last a few days and various visitors (not kidding have one friend who constantly checks if there’s any on the go. You need a good knife to get the chicken cut into tiny strips, through the tougher roots as well as the softer stuff like mushrooms and chillies. Getting hungry now…

I have seen these products in TK MAxx but never bought them. Like you I like a weightier knife, but those colours are so poppy and bright and would give a lift in most kitchens. And I can always use more cutting boards. Can’t we all!?

My favourite recipe that involves lots of chopping is my world famous guacamole! Chop as finely as you can red onion, tomatoes (de-skinned and de-seeded), chilli and coriander. Smush the avocado with a fork (technical term!), mix ingredients together with a squeeze of lime and salt and pepper. Goes amazingly in fish tacos, chilli con carne and chicken fajitas.

Mine too! That photo I have above with the veg and knife in it was just before I started chopping all of that up to make guacamole! Recipe to be blogged shortly (but it’s not vastly different than yours!) 🙂
