Gin Explorer - Review & Giveaway

Win a 3 Month Gin Explorer Subscription worth £69.99

Published on May 19, 2016 • Last updated September 25, 2016 by Elizabeth Atia

Review & giveaway in collaboration with Gin Explorer.

Gin Explorer - Review & Giveaway

As a food blogger I am given the opportunity to try out all sorts of new and upcoming products. One of the most fantastic things to drop through my letterbox recently was the new subscription box from Gin Explorer, the brain child of the folk behind The Gin Festival – yes, there are really gin festivals throughout the year dotted around the UK! One of these days I’ll be lucky enough to attend one!

Gin Explorer is a brand new and exciting way to sample, explore and learn about gins from across the globe from the comfort of your own home.

Become an armchair explorer and join the Gin Explorer journey to receive a selection of different gin miniatures each and every month direct through your door. Each high quality gin is hand selected by your personal tour guide to take you on a culinary journey; thrilling your taste buds and awakening your senses.  A witty and very amusing leaflet detailing all about the heritage and origin of the gins will your gin knowledge, and passion, along the way.

Gin Explorer - Review & Giveaway

With the entire globe being explored, Gin Explorer assures that gin experts and novices alike will discover a delicious variety of rare, classic and unusual gins.

The Gin Explorer experience also includes surprises each month including mixers for you to experiment with and other gin treats.

We were given the opportunity to try out the April subscription box which contained four fantastic gin miniatures of English origin: 6 o’clock Gin from Bristol, England; Ish London Dry Gin from London, England; the fantastically named Zymurgorium’s Manchester Gin from Manchester, England, and the Little Scarlet Strawberry Gin Liqueur from Essex, England – each utterly wonderful and remarkably different in flavouring and finish.

There was also a bottle of 1724 tonic water (did you know that the greatest quinine can be found at precisely 1724 feet on the Inca Trail in the Andes?) and a miniature jar of marmalade along with a recipe for The Breakfast Martini. True story – a breakfast martini! How utterly civilized is that? 🙂

Gin Explorer - Review & Giveaway

All in all we were very impressed with the Gin Explorer subscription box. A great deal of thought and research has gone into creating the accompanying leaflet – it’s clearly written by people with a passion for gin and its enthusiasm is infectious.

Subscriptions start from £24.99 for a rolling monthly subscription, or you can buy a three month or 12 month subscription. I think this would be a fantastic gift idea for any gin fan.

Follow the Gin Explorer on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit their website to find out more.

Gin Explorer have very kindly offered the chance for one of my UK readers to win a three month Gin Explorer subscription, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below to enter!

I use to have a girlfriend who claimed that Gin gave you nosebleeds so it wasn’t until last year that I actually had a glass of Gin… at over 40 years old. I’m now a convert and would love the opportunity to sample a few more flavours …

I don’t know if this is amusing or not, but my nan used to drink a lot of Gin and tonic in here life. She said gin was capable of making even the strongest women cry! I used to laugh at her and call her crazy. But, I swear, every time I drink Gin I get so emotional. I either love everybody or hate everybody. She was right, and I miss her so much. She died before I was old enough to drink, but I’m sure she would be laughing at me and saying, ‘I told you so!!’

Wasn’t quite funny for me but everyone else has laughed for years about this. I was out collecting berries for my sloe gin batch of the year, when I slipped on wet grass and fell head first into the bushes. I emerged like a giant hedgehog, felt utterly ridiculous and in so much pain from the thorns I abandoned making the sloe gin and drank most of the bottle to drown my sorrows! Never lived it down lol

I had been offered Gin over the years. Declined as I kept to drinking what I knew I liked. Eventually tried it when on a weekend away to Dublin, Ireland with friends. To me it tastes like perfume, as I told my persistent friend on the occasion that I did finally try tasting it. Still it is her favourite drink. If I win I will give the prize to my friend as I know she will Appreciate it.

I don’t have a funny story but I do have warm fuzzy memories associated with drinking Gin with my Mum as it’s our ‘Christmas drink’ – when we used to make the Christmas dinner while the men were at the pub (like we’d gone back in time and were 50’s housewives) we’d have a cheeky G’n’T in between bursts of activity and we’d chat about all sorts. Was especially nice after I’d moved out of home to keep the tradition going 🙂

I was a new mum with a baby a few weeks old. One day I made dinner ready for when my husband came home and poured us two g&t’s while my baby slept. Everything was perfect. Half an hour later, hubby had been held up at work, my daughter wouldn’t stop crying, tea was overcooked and I had drunk both my and his gin. Grandma, aged nearly 90 and living in Germany, still went out locally each morning to shop and have a coffee. for some reason, only known to her, she decided to have a gin and tonic with her cuppa but she had never drunk alcohol before. You can imagine how it affected her. I hope I live to do something outrageous at 90 but it would definitely include a glass of gin!

Only one I really have (or willing to share lol) is when one of our male friends came round, I had no beers or anything alcoholic to offer other than gin and tonic (what we were drinking at the time) reluctantly and after moaning about it being a girls’ drink he had a glass, then a few more and before you know it was having to get a taxi home. When me and my husband went to pick him up the next day to get his car, his mum told us of how she found him at 4am asleep in the porch after giving up on working out how to open the front door. Girl’s drink eh? lol

I drank gin before I ever drank milk. I wouldn’t swallow when I was born and the doctors told my mum I wouldn’t make it, but an old Irish nurse knew better than them and marched to the pub over the road and got a bottle of gin, so for the first few weeks of my life I had gin squirted down my throat to relax everything before every feed. Still love the stuff!!

I found myself in a bar which I knew was not for me when I ordered a Gin and Lemon and was served with a shot of gin with a slice of lemon balanced on top. Horrified and unable to get the bar-persons attention again I shot the gin (to be fair – it was poor gin so don’t feel guilty about that) and went to find somewhere more to my taste

I’d love to win this as I’m a big gin fan! I’d never really thought much about different gins but once when I was at a pub, the barmaid accidentally poured Bombay Sapphire instead of the pub standard, and I realised how different individual gins are. Now I’m always trying new ones!

    Gin can make you smile,
Gin can make you forget about things,
    Every once in a while.
    Gin can make you giggle,
Gin can fill you with glee,
Gin can make you forget you’re 40,
And that you needed to pee

No funny story, but I did write that for you

I once decided to have a girl’s night in and invited half a dozen friends round via email. The mail was supposed to read (in a faux pretentious fashion) “bring le vin” but a typo made it “bring le gin”. And everyone did! A quick run to the shop for mixers and it turned into a gin tasting night as only two people had brought the same brand.

A few years ago I decided to mix gin with red wine (bad idea I know). I had an exercise ball in my bedroom and thought it would be a good idea to sit on it seductively. Next thing I know, I tripped over the ball, whacked my head on the wall, fell back on the ball and bounced straight onto the guy I was trying to impress elbowing him in the mouth. So embarrassing!

No funny gin story but will a joke do instead?

A man runs into a bar and slams some money down. “I want a gin and tonic.” He gasps, looking around wildly. The barman pours him the drink and he downs it in one gulp. Suddenly police appear from everywhere. They pop out from behind doors, they come out from the floorboards, and some even descend from the ceiling on ropes. They shoot the customer over and over and over again. Then they grab his lifeless body, pull him over to a pole which they have brought in, tie him to it, and set the pole on fire. After the body has been burned they all run off leaving the barman standing there shocked. Another man walks in, looks around, and walks up to the barman. He puts some money down on the bar and says “I’d like a gin and tonic please.” The barman slowly shakes his head and says “That’s not a good idea.

My parents weren’t gin drinkers, but always kept a bottle of gin in the cupboard in case anyone that dropped by fancied some. As teenagers, me and my brother would take the gin and replace it with water, as teenaagers are wont to do. By the time we stopped, the gin was mostly water. Now in our 30s, we confessed our sins. My parents replied the bottle had lasted a good long time because people never seemed to want a second glass – now they know why! Nowadays, I have my own gin stash, and I’m always looking to try new types – I’d love to try the Gin Explorer.

I went to a gin bar with some friends, some were gins fans and some had never really tried it before. The barman was asking us all what we wanted in turn, some knew what they wanted others were asking for advice. One of my friends who wasn’t really a gin drinker, asked ‘Have you got anything with juniper in it?’ Not missing a beat the barman says ‘Gin?!’. Cue laughter a very red-faced friend who realised what she had said!
