Scotch Lamb bolognese – my kids’ favourite midweek dinner recipe

If you ask my children what they want for dinner, they’ll say pasta. In fact, I asked them what they wanted for Christmas dinner this year – if they could have anything they wanted, what would it be. Their response: pasta bolognese.

My Scotch Lamb bolognese recipe is one of their absolute favourites, and it’s super easy to whip up too. I often make a big batch and freeze it in two-child servings for a quick midweek meal when time isn’t on our side.

Ingredients for bolognese sauce

Ingredients needed

  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 medium brown onion
  • 1 medium-sized carrot
  • 1 celery stick
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 475 grams Scotch Lamb mince
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • salt & pepper
  • 200 ml lamb stock
  • 400 grams chopped tomatoes

  2. Add the Scotch Lamb mince and season well with salt and pepper.
  3. Fry the Scotch Lamb mince until browned all over.
  4. Add the tomato puree and dried thyme.
  5. Add the lamb stock and tinned tomatoes.
  6. Cover, reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the lamb bolognese sauce is thick and reduced.

Tips for making lamb bolognese for fussy eaters

  • use a mini food processor to cut the vegetables as finely as you can
  • this recipe freezes very well. Simply defrost and reheat!
  • keep the flavours mild – you can always spice lamb bolognese up at the table with a drizzle of chilli-infused olive oil, or a sprinkling of cayenne pepper

What pasta do I serve Scotch Lamb bolognese with?

Lamb bolognese sauce is best served with wide, flat pasta such as tagliatelle, pappardelle or linguine.

Bigton Farm – Meet the Crofter!

We are a family of meat-eaters, and I believe it’s our responsibility, as consumers, to make sure that the meat we’re buying comes from quality sources – preferably as local as possible to reduce food miles, and reared to a high standard of animal welfare.

I recently visited Bigton Farm here in Shetland to learn about the dedication and commitment sheep farmers are putting into producing top quality Scotch Lamb PGI. On this 300-hectare farm overlooking one of Shetland’s most picturesque beaches, sisters Kirsty & Aimee Budge are reinventing what it means to be a crofter. They are the 7th generation in the family to farm these lands, and in 2018 they won the BBC Countryfile Farming Heroes award for the pioneering work that they’re doing.

Kirsty and Aimee are working hard to make their farm even more sustainable, economically and environmentally – rearing 300 sheep, 90 cows and 80 acres of barley crops.

Bigton Farm is a Quality Meat Scotland Monitor Farm, one of only nine across Scotland as an example of best practice. The sisters are involved in organising and running QMS meetings, presenting and providing data as well as promoting women in agriculture.

Why choose Scotch Lamb PGI?

Scotch Lamb PGI is whole chain assured lamb from Scotland. It an easy to recognise label that ensures consumers the product they are buying is from specific animals sourced from selected Scottish farms, like Bigton Farm. These selected farms are adopting the best practice including animal welfare and natural production methods.

PGI stands for Protected Geographical Indication. It’s an EU scheme to protect and promote high quality traditional and regional food products unique to a geographic area.

Scotch Lamb PGI logoWhen you see the Scotch Lamb PGI logo, you can be confident that the lamb was born, reared and processed in Scotland and held whole life quality assurance.

When you’re shopping (perhaps for the ingredients for this lamb bolognese recipe!), look for the blue Scotch Lamb label to guarantee the quality and provenance of the lamb in your basket.

I love a good lamb mince dish and often wonder why we don’t use it more often. Your lamb bolognese looks and sounds delicious… and I’m sure if I had a fussy kid, it would be perfect for getting her to eat… But she’s not fussy and I suspect she’d just wolf it down anyway x

Lamb is definitely one of my all-time favourite meats. However, I may be biased as I am from Wales but personally I think Welsh Lamb is the best! I love the look of your Scotch Lamb bolognese though.

I love bolognese sauce but haven’t tried it with lamb. If it’s kid-approved, then it’s sure to be delicious!

Yeah perfect for kids! It will give me some new inspiration and ideas of introducing new things. I’m a fussy eater myself so it may be helpful
