Book Review: Pie – Dean Brettschneider

Published on September 26, 2013 • Last updated April 8, 2016 by Elizabeth
“Cooking is an art and baking is a science – making pies a combination of both”

Who can resist a cook with a title and cover like this? I know one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but as soon as I saw the cover of this book I was instantly salivating and craving carbohydrates.

Pie is the tenth cookbook by the award-winning Global Baker and pâtissier Dean Brettschneider and it includes recipes and detailed instructions for over 80 mouth watering pies. Hearty meat pies, seafood pies vegetarian pies, not-quite-pies (including chocolate whoopie pies!) and a collection of sweet pies are accompanied by stunning photography throughout. Nearly every recipe is accompanied by a gorgeous photograph which, for me, is a key component in enticing me to try a new recipe. There is a section on basic recipes from sweet and short pastries to puff pastry and most importantly, thorough descriptions and photographs to help you along, plus tips on decorating for that show stopping finish.

I believe this is a staple cookery book for any bookshelf, especially with the coming winter months when we all want to hibernate and eat pie! The salmon, wild rocket and orzo pie is next on my list of recipes to try and my teenage son took an instant liking to the orange blossom and white chocolate cheesecake pie with roast rhubarb recipe. I’ve had several requests to make the custard tart recipe by visiting friends who have flicked through the pages of the cookbook over a cup of coffee. Personally, I want to start at the beginning and make every single recipe in the book!

First published in New Zealand in 2012, this 224 page hardback book will be available in the UK on the 17th of October 2013 published by Jacqui Small LLP. You can pre-order it now from Amazon at a discounted price.

Welcome to Elizabeth’s Kitchen Diary, Scotland’s most northerly award-winning food blog.

I’m based in the wild and remote Shetland Islands, where I’ve been sharing my adventure-fuelling recipes since 2011.

As seen on Shetland: Scotland’s Wondrous Isles on Channel 5 and Made of Here – A road trip for the ages through television on the BBC.

“Never underestimate the power of your own story. Life may have taken unexpected turns, but it’s never too late to weave new threads of adventure into your tapestry. Keep spinning those yarns, my friend.
