Smokey SPAM® Chilli

To celebrate SPAM® Appreciation Week I’ve created this Smokey SPAM® Chilli recipe – perfect for camping adventures.

Ok, admittedly for the purposes of this recipe post, I’ve photographed this indoors instead of outside as the week I made/photographed it we were being hit by a series of gales here in Shetland – not ideal weather for camping, but you can see how easy it is to prepare.

Now… bring on the fine summer weather and another season of epic camping adventures!

Tips for making SPAM® chilli when camping

  • prep all your vegetables in advance – they all get put into the cooking pot at once you can store them in a single container/bag.
  • blend your spice mixture in advance and store in an airtight container (a wee glass jar works well)
  • omit the liquid smoke – if you’re camping you’ll have the real thing!
  • SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham doesn’t require refrigeration, making it an ideal portable camping protein.

About SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham

SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham came to our UK kitchens in 1941 during the war as an alternative to corned beef. It rose quickly in popularity, selling its one billionth can in the 1950s. In the 1960s SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham fritters regularly appeared on British school menus.

This iconic product is originally from the US when, in 1937, the Hormel Food Company of Minnesota dealt with a problem they had of too much pork shoulder. The idea to grind the pork shoulder and mix it with ham, cooking it in a tin to create a long-life product was born, and now, over 80 years later, it’s still going strong!

It’s time to Sizzle-Off this SPAM® Appreciation Week

As an incredibly versatile ingredient, SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham is made from a minimum of 90% shoulder pork and leg ham. The 200g tub is currently available in the UK from Tesco and Asda while 200g and 340g cans are available from all major UK supermarkets.

This SPAM® Appreciation Week, fans will have the opportunity to create quick and easy recipes by sizzling SPAM® Products in a wok, pan or on the grill, with a recipe theme from either Europe, USA or Asia. There will be winners in each category, but the overall winner will receive a £1000 holiday or shopping voucher plus a coveted trophy.

From SPAMBURGERS™ to SPAM® Musubi, it’s time to get that can out of the cupboard and show what this versatile meat can really do!

Why not get involved and share your SPAM® Sizzle-Off recipe either on social media, using hashtag #SPAMsizzle, or via www.spam-uk.com. This competition runs on social media until the 8th of March.
